MoES-NERC MoU on Changing Water Cycle: South Asia is an important region in understanding Changing Water Cycles at both the global and local scale. New collaborative research has the potential to make a significant contribution because of the following.
The South Asian region has a very high level of water usage and the potential for water scarcity in the future.
There are significant science challenges in the region relating to, for example, improved understanding of the Indian monsoon; the potential connection with weather patterns in northern Europe; and the important (and poorly understood) interactions between climate, glaciers, groundwater and water resources.
In order to scope the areas for potential collaboration, a workshop to bring together leading researchers from both India and the UK was held in New Delhi in February 2010. The UK and Indian Governments signed a memorandum of understanding, on dated 17th February 2010, to agree to work together to support research in this area. The MoU was signed by Indian Minister of Earth Sciences and his counterpart, the British Minister. The agreement, valid for an initial period of 5 years, is for undertaking specific collaborative projects for the changing water cycle under various themes:
NERC and ESSO-MoES to Strengten UK-INDIAN Collaboration in Earth Sciences and evnvironmental research
The Natural Environment Research Council of the UK (NERC) and the Earth System Science Organization, Ministry of Earth Sciences of the Republic of India (ESSO-MoES) have agreed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to facilitate cooperation between the UK and Indian earth system science and environmental research communities. The MoU between NERC and ESSO-NERC was signed on 1 March, 2013 in the presence of the Hon'ble Minister of Earth Sciences, Shri. Jaipal Sudini Reddy.
The UK and India have shared interests and strengths in research on meteorology, climate variability and change, oceanography, hydrology, cryosphere, natural hazards and biodiversity. The new MoU will encourage collaboration in these areas by promoting information sharing and identification of new opportunities for collaborative activities such as networking, exchange of scientific and technical capability, and co-funding new research through joint calls. The MoU will be put to immediate effect.
