Delhi Book Fairs

T
he Department took part in the display of S&T publications during the Delhi Book Fair organised by the Federation of Indian Publishers at Pragati Maidan from August 14-22, 1999. Copies of various articles published by scientists from the Department and its autonomous bodies, viz., NIOT, NCAOR, etc., oceanographic literature by way of annual reports, technical brochures, annual Antarctic scientific expedition reports, popular publications under the ‘Sagar Manthan’ series, books in Hindi, etc., were exhibited for viewing by the public. In addition, a film on the Department’s activities was also projected. A multimedia quiz for children was also provided via interactive touch screen monitor.

India International Maritime Expo'99

The Department took the lead in participating in India’s first ever International Exhibition and Conference on the Maritime Industry under the aegis of the India International Maritime Expo'99 (INMEX'99) held at Panjim, Goa, from October 6-10, 1999. Achievements under Polar Science, Ocean Observation and Information Services, Ocean Energy and Deep Seabed Mining programmes of the Department were given emphasis. A multimedia corner for enabling children to learn via special CD- ROMs on ocean related subjects was a key feature of this expo. Further, films on the activities of the Department and NIOT were also shown here which proved very popular amongst the students.

India International Trade Fair (IITF)

The Department participated in the India International Trade Fair (IITF)'99 held from November 14-27, 1999. This turned out to be one of the most popular fairs organized by the India Trade Fair Organisation at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. Department's pavilion was adjudged Second for Excellence in Display (for Central Government pavilions) and awarded the Silver Medal. Several exhibits in the form of panels, dioramas, models, trans-lights and film shows were showcased by the Department. The multimedia interactive presentation developed on CD covering the entire gamut of the Department’s programmes viz., Antarctic Expeditions and Polar Science, Marine Living Resources, Marine Non Living Resources, Coastal and Marine Area Management, Ocean Observation and Information Services, Marine Research and Capacity Building, etc, were also made to the public. This quiz software was especially designed for children and college students who visit the Fair, with multiple choice objective questions accompanied by video clips activated by touch of hand on computer monitor. Mementos like bookmarks, key chain, brochures on the Department, etc., were distributed amongst visitors to the Department stall.

Swadeshi Vigyan Mela

As part of the national exposition on indigenous science and technology – traditional and modern, the Swadeshi Vigyan Mela was organised at IIT campus, New Delhi from February 2-6, 2000 by Vigyan Bharati, Students for Development and Centre for Bharatiya Marketing Development. The Department set up an Antarctic Park in a remarkable display making full use of open spaces over 72 sq. m. depicting India’s achievements in Antarctica. Also a diorama of Deep Seabed Mining was shown graphically with backlit panels and a shadow-light portrayal of waves lapping the ocean shores in a beautiful rendering of the oceans beneath the vast blue sky. Multimedia corner for the kids and touch screen quiz for children was also a feature of the Department pavilion.
