5.2 Coastal Research Vessels

Two Coastal Research vessels, namely, Sagar Purvi and Sagar Paschimi have been built in India during the year 1996 under a Plan scheme of DOD. These vessels are being used for the coastal oceanographic research programmes of DOD and NIOT. The vessel times are also made available to public and private sectors on a payment basis depending on the nature of the programme. The vessels are mostly used for the COMAPS programme of DOD. The task of operation, management and implementation of the cruise programme have been assigned to NIOT.

SAGAR PURVI

The vessel Sagar Purvi has completed regular COMAPS monitoring by CECRI and NIO, Vizag and other oceanographic observations for IOM, Anna University, University of Madras. The vessel was also used for survey for establishment of SPM for BPCL at Gopalpur. The vessel was used for microbiology observations for the waste load allocation project under ICMAM.

SAGAR PASCHIMI

The vessel Sagar Paschimi has completed all her scheduled programs for the period in April and May 99. The vessel was dry docked at Cochin Port Trust and the annual maintenance were completed during the monsoon lay up period. Later, vessel has completed COMAPS programs for five Institutions.

Both the vessels have completed cruises and sampling stations as per the details given in the tables below.
