4.3 National Ocean Information System (NOIS)

A large number of research institutions, academic establishments, survey and oil exploration agencies in the country dealing with a variety of ocean and ocean related activities need enormous data on several oceanographic parameters. These data are required for several coastal developmental projects, exploitation of living and non-living resources and for understanding of coastal processes cause coastal erosion and accretion. In this context, to develop and disseminate the data products for the benefit of scientists and policy makers in the country, the Department of Ocean Development has established the programme NOIS. Under this programme, National Marine Data Centres (NMDC) have been established in 13 specialist institutions in specific areas of activity located in different parts of India. The objectives of the NMDCs are collection, validation, collation, storage and dissemination of data and information to the users.

During the year, 1996-97, 11 data centres have been made operational and these are engaged in the collection and storage of data. Formats for storage was reviewed and updated through specialised working groups. Guidelines for exchange of data were also developed. A brochure containing information on availability of data with NMDCs was circulated among the potential users.
