Oceanographic surveys in the Exclusive Economic Zone of the country are being carried out since 1984 utilising the Oceanographic Research Vessel (ORV) Sagar Kanya and Fishery and Oceanographic Research Vessel (FORV) Sagar Sampada. The data and information generated by these vessels are supplemented to some extent by the research vessels operated by other agencies like the Geological Survey of India, Fishery Survey of India and Council of Scienfic and Industrial Research.
