The second Sub-Committee of the Committee of Parliament on Official Language inspected the
Department on 21 December 1990 and expressed its satisfaction on the progressive use of Hindi in the
official work and made suggestions for enhancing the use of Hindi. Quarterly meetings of the Official
Language Implementation Committee were held under the Chairmanship of Joint Secretary
(Administration) to review the progressive use of Hindi in the day to day work of the Department. A Hindi
workshop was held for the officers on 10 December 1990 in which 10 gazetted officers participated. A Hindi
workshop on ocean sciences was held at the National Institute of Oceanography, Goa on 3 December 1990.
14 scientists from various institutes, universities & laboratories read papers. A scheme was instituted to
promote original writing on ocean sciences and allied subjects in Hindi language. Under this scheme five
books were evaluated by the senior officers and scientists for award.
All correspondence, documents, papers specified under Section 3(3) of the Official Languages Act, 1963,
as amended, were issued both in Hindi and English and efforts to promote the use of Hindi in official work
were continued. Hindi week was observed from l4-20 September 1990, during which essay writing in Hindi,
noting, drafting and typing competitions were held. 35 employees participated in these competitions.

During the Sessions of the Ninth Lok Sabha, 21 unstarred and one starred questions were admitted and
answered. One assurance was also fulfilled. Two starred questions and three unstarred questions were
admitted and answered in the Rajya Sabha.
