2.4. The 10th Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica

The 10th Indian scientific expedition to Antarctica returned to Goa on 25 March 1991 , leaving behind 25 members at Maitri for carrying out scientific work during the Antarctic winter. The expedition brought back 22 members of the 7th winter team.

According to preliminary reports, all the tasks set for the expedition were accomplished. These include:

Geological mapping around the greater, Maitri region and establishment of geodetic control points

Geological and geophysical survey of Humboldt and Wohlthat region

Establishment of a monostatic acoustic sounder in Antarctica for mapping the atmospheric structure

Establishment of a 3-component digital magnetometric observatory for geomagnetic studies

Setting up of a dome type greenhouse equipped with facilities for hydroponics

Study on environment physiology and medicine in isolated environments

Erection of a housing for a sophisticated laser heterodyne system to be set up next year

Maintenance and repair of essential systems at Maitri and renovation of base camp at Dakshin Gangotri.
