During 2000-2001, all out efforts were made to promote the progressive
use of Hindi in the department. The meetings of official language
implementation committee were held regularly under the Chairmanship of the
Joint Secretary.
The annual report, performance budget, demand for grants, all cabinet
reports, monthly summary to cabinet and documents to be presented to the
Parliament Consultative and Standing Committees, etc., were prepared
bilingually.
The year-long celebrations on fiftieth year of Hindi as official language
came to an end with Hindi fortnight that was organised by the Department from
14th to 28th September 2000. During this period, Hindi essay writing, noting &
drafting and debate competitions were held. For the first time a quiz was held
in Hindi to test the knowledge of the staff about the Department and its various
programmes. About 45 employees participated in it. Secretary, DOD gave away
the prizes and certificates to the winning officers and employees.
The second Sub-Committee of Parliament on Official Languages visited
the Department on 18th September 2000 and found the Hindi work in the
Department to be satisfactory. All the officers and employees of the
Department possess either working knowledge of Hindi or are proficient in its
use.
The Department organised the ninth National Scientific Hindi Seminar on
'Samudra Vigyan Ke Do Dashak' at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi on 22nd
January 2001. About 20 scientists from different institutions related with
oceanography participated in the seminar.
